Susan L Combs has spent a quarter of a century building a career around seeing what others miss—whether assessing risk, solving an insurance challenge, developing litigation strategy or finding a new way to turn service into action. As the founder and principal of Combs & Company, she advises businesses across industries on insurance, risk assessment and strategies that protect what matters most. Her firm specializes in complex risks and non-traditional accounts, from entertainment and food to international companies and organizations entering the U.S. market.
Susan holds the PPACA certification and the ChHC and REBC designations and has developed deep expertise across insurance, risk assessment and complex coverage issues. Since 2014, she has served as an expert witness and litigation strategist for law firms, hospital systems, construction firms and national transportation organizations, as well as reinsurance carriers. Her work focuses on the intersection of insurance coverage, access, cost and future medical care—helping translate complicated questions of coverage, access, cost and future medical care into practical, understandable terms and developing litigation strategies that inform better outcomes.
Susan is a professional emcee, industry speaker, educator and advisor. In 2017, she became the first woman named BenefitsPRO Broker of the Year and joined the BenefitsPRO Advisory Board, where she has served since that time. She is also proud to serve on the Advisory Board of Health Intelligence Network (HIN).
Susan is the author of two best-selling books. Pancakes for Roger: A Mentorship Guide for Slaying Dragons (2022) shares lessons on mentorship, resilience and leadership. Wonder Women: The Untold Stories of Female Veterans (2026) brings twelve remarkable Veteran stories to life and has resonated with readers across the country. She also serves as a professional emcee for events that celebrate leadership, mission and impact.
In 2023, Susan founded Pancakes for Roger, Inc., a 501(c)(3) nonprofit honoring the legacy of her father, Major General Roger E. Combs. Every February, Pancake Month unites thousands across all 50 states, the District of Columbia, 38+ countries and all 7 continents in a grassroots campaign that supports the University of Missouri School of Law Veterans Clinic. The Clinic provides Veterans with legal assistance at no charge, including help navigating VA claims and appeals, discharge upgrades and a wide range of other legal issues. Since 2019, more than $55,000 has been donated to support this critical work. Pancakes for Roger also provides direct support through its Veteran Housing Support & Improvement Grants—offering up to $1,500 paid directly to service providers for rent, utilities, home repairs or accessibility modifications—and additional programs that include scholarships, community partnerships, fitness fundraising events and care packages for Veterans and their families.
A 2001 graduate of the University of Missouri with a degree in Hotel & Restaurant Management, Susan spent nearly a quarter of a century in New York City before relocating to Amherst, New Hampshire, at the end of 2024. She remains deeply connected to Missouri and New York and committed to honoring service, mentoring others and making a meaningful difference.
Outside of work, Susan is a CrossFit Level 1 coach and competitive athlete with a bench press north of 200 pounds, an avid gardener, writer and budding photographer. With a professional life rooted in analysis, risk and strategy, she has always made room for a creative outlet—although what form it takes tends to evolve.
She lives in Amherst, New Hampshire, with her husband, Sean, and their four-legged crew, Roxy and Pepper.
